Emailed Steering Group members asking them to promote our Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious public engagement project because they are keen to involve our Region’s fresh, new talent whether they are disadvantaged communities, girls or ethnic minorities.
Engineers lead the drive to ensure the next generation have the right enthusiasm and skills to be successful engineers; those already confirmed include tribology and systems experts at the University of Sheffield and IBM respectively.
We plan to run our events, which all have an electronic engineering focus, in venues around the City including Sheffield College, primary/secondary schools, Magna Science Adventure Centre and the Winter Gardens.
PLUS we have access to AMRC/NMRC newly revamped Mantra Bus which we will use for at least three events with Sheffield College.
Delivery methods have been designed to ensure young people:
- Have fun;
- Complete a simple engineering activity;
- Learn to think like an engineer; and
- Develop an engineering design protocol.
Engineers will use equipment to develop creativity and inspire young people to learn how to think like engineers and see the fun in maths and science of engineering. We’ll use a range of toys with a wide range of applications such as the Jitterbug which vibrates, rotates is great for young children, Makey Makey and Arduino for computer/ system/software engineering.
Recruited engineers will receive free training relevant to their public engagement.
Total time commitment is only 4 hours: 2 hour briefing; 2-hour public engagement c. 2-3 weeks later.
PLUS free light refreshments with time to talk about engineering in exciting new ways for young audiences as well as:
- Network with your colleagues;
- Draw on your expertise to develop engineering design problems; and
- Practice public engagement in a safe environment.
We hope this inspires you to contribute a little time to our well-received Royal Academy of Engineering Ingenious Grant project which our Region’s leading engineers are supporting with their presence on our Steering Group – we’ll also circulate details of event activities immediately this has been finalised.
